Not Back to School

Homeschool Momma with her students

While everyone else gears up to share their back to school photos, homeschoolers around the country like to share their #notbacktoschool photos, and we are no different. Yesterday was our first day not back to school, so we all got our pictures, and I asked the kids a few questions about the new school year.

My Students...

Britt

Britt
  • Height: 5'6 3/8"

  • Weight: 116

  • Age: 14

  • Grade: 9th

What are you most looking forward to this school year?

I am most looking forward to geocaching. It fun to treasure hunt and find the path that most people take to locate it.

What is something that you plan to do differently, or try that is new to you?

I plan to learn biology, and it's been a long time since I have learned about level. It will be a more specific level with greater detail.

What subject do you think will be most difficult and why?

Algebra. Pre-algebra ripped me to shreds so I am not looking forward to it.

Ruth

Ruth
  • Height: 4'10 1/2"

  • Weight: 100.4 lbs

  • Age: 12 (but only for one more week)

  • Grade: 9th

What are you most looking forward to this school year?

Geocaching! I think it will be really fun to do. It will be fun to collect different items and the stickers on the app.

What is something that you plan to do differently, or try that is new to you?

Sleeping in a sleeping bag under the stars, no tent or anything when we adventure. As for school I am excited to use a calculator finally for math.

What subject do you think will be most difficult and why?

Biology is new and might be hard, but we know the animal kingdom well. Maybe Algebra since I don't know what to expect.

Rebecca

Rebecca
  • Height: 4'5"

  • Weight: 81.4 lbs

  • Age: 10

  • Grade: 5th

What are you most looking forward to this school year?

I like to adventure, but I am not sure if Friday Adventuring will be my kind of adventures. So maybe Geocaching, but I am not sure how easy they will be to find.

What is something that you plan to do differently, or try that is new to you?

Even though I didn't choose it Earth Science will be new. Learning about rocks by baking should be fun.

What subject do you think will be most difficult and why?

I am going to say science, most thinks have been pretty easy, but this science will be really new, and remembering all the rocks might be hard.

Katherine

Katherine
  • Height: 3'9"

  • Weight: 45 lbs.

  • Age: 6

  • Grade: 1st

What are you most looking forward to this school year?

Getting my own math book and doing more with math blocks.

What is something that you plan to do differently, or try that is new to you?

Learning to read. I am excited to read stuff with no help and write on cards without Momma's help.

What subject do you think will be most difficult and why?

Definitely reading, because I still have trouble with some of the letters so I will need a lot of help with that.

Educators and Support Staff...

Will and Jon

Will and Jon
  • Support Staff

  • In charge of Character Development as they create learning situations

  • Along for the ride

  • Will height: 2'10 1/4" and weight: 26.8 lbs

  • Jon height: 2'9" and weight: 25.2 lbs

The boys were tight lipped and gave us no answers. However, I'm sure the boys will be great support and not create any problems this school year... yeah, right, but at least the trouble they create can be viewed as learning opportunities as we work hard to develop patience among other character traits.

Momma

Momma
  • Primary Teacher in the one room schoolhouse

  • Year Homeschooling: 11th

What are you most looking forward to this school year?

Our Friday adventures, and traveling more this year. I can't wait to see what "field trip" opportunities we'll have for science and history.

What is something that you plan to do differently, or try that is new to you?

I'm excited and nervous about the kids science programs this year. While Rebecca and Kate are using a familiar level of Apologia science, it'll be new for Kate to have her own science book, and really be a part of science, since she'll just be learning to read and write I'm not sure how it will go. Britt and Ruth however, will be doing high school level Biology which will include four dissections, as I never dissected anything in my high school honors biology class, this will be very new to me, and I'm feeling a bit squeamish about the whole process.

What subject do you think will be most difficult and why?

I'm anticipating science being the most difficult, due to the level of work involved and detail of experiments. But I might be surprised and find math most difficult this year, not because Algebra is that complicated, but because the three oldest have such an aversion to math they think it will be more difficult than it really is.
