Longer Day Trips: Wakulla State Forest

Early in July, we decided to make a quick trip to Alabama. My parents were graciously giving us one of their cars since we were down to one car due to the accident. Since we were going up, Gary and I made the decision to make a short detour at Wakulla State Forest. Located just south of Tallahassee and approximately 3 and a half hours from our home, this could have been an all day, longer day trip.

Once we arrived we began by driving around the state forest a bit. It was a nice area, and we quickly spotted our first bit of wildlife from the window, a snake. Gary and Britt got out to get better pictures and try to determine what it was. At first we thought it might be a diamond back rattle snake, but upon closer inspection it had some unusual coloring and no rattle. We have looked at several pictures and it looks a little like an Eastern Pine Snake and a little like a Grey Rat Snake, in other words we still haven't identified quite what we saw.

The area was mostly a pine forested area, but unfortunately it was a bust. We hiked approximately 1/3 of the trail before giving up and heading back to the car. The trail was incredibly overgrown, with areas where the grass was around knee high. We found so many ticks and then chiggers in the grass that we had to come back and clean up. Perhaps in the fall or winter the trail might not be so bad, or at least when it is cut back. The kids called it an "epic fail" and ranked it as the worst trail of the year. However, this was the final trail to get our next patch in our Trailwalker series so at least we can claim that.

If you'd like to try your luck and make a trip the address to this forest is 3674 Bloxham Cutoff Road, Crawfordville, Florida. They are open from sunrise to sunset, everyday. For more information you can call 850-421-3101. Entrance to the Park is $2 for a car load of up to 6 people over the age of six.
