Gary suggested this month that we include a series of post from the kids' perspective allowing them to share the Adventure Fridays that they have learned the most from. We have been on 32 adventures this school year, not counting our trips with co-op. So we wondered what the kids would rank as their top learning opportunities. Read on for their input on places and events that they felt were the most educational.

The Adventure Friday that I learned the most from was the Bluffton Interpretive Trail at Lake George State Forest. I learned about how mosquitos love places with water nearby. The more water there is the more mosquitos will be there. Because it had flooded there were lots and lots of mosquitos there. I learned how oranges take a while to grow, a really long time, a whole year. I also learned that they are sour if you eat them when they are green. They aren't sweet until they get enough sugar in their juice. There were also signs about different trees, but I have forgotten about those.

The Adventure Friday that I have learned the most from was visiting the Civil War Reenactment at the Dade City Pioneer Village and Museum. We learned about the war, and got to actually see how they fought. It was fun to watch how they would fall down and pretend they got shot, then stay there without moving. It was cool to watch the smoke as they shot the cannons and the guns too. Then there was the Union Captain who kept yelling at his men, so I learned that war was loud and noisy. Then I really liked the Cavalry even though there was only four of them. We learned their basic commands and how they fought on horseback and from the ground. Britt looked at the blacksmith shop, and Ruth liked the school house, but I spent most of my time at a pioneer home using the loom. It was an old fashion loom, and they let me operate it. It made me appreciate my clothes. If it was a daily chore I probably wouldn't have liked it very much, and it would take a long time to make cloth, to then make into clothes.

I learned the most from our Adventure Friday at Fort Cooper State Park. It was interesting to learn how they fortified an area, using logs upright and weaving rope between them. It also surprised me at how fast they could erect those fort walls when they needed to. I also learned that after the initial battle near present day Bushnell, that there were actually three survivors. I learned how the Seminoles adapted in Central Florida. They went from owning farms in North Florida, to having to navigate swamps, learn to deal with mosquitos and grow different foods. They formed new recipes to use the plants in the swamp. They even had to adapt the way they built houses so that they could be in the swamp but stay dry. But they still kept much of their original culture. I also learned that they have a really great swing set there, ha!

I learned the most on the Adventure Friday that we went to Lake Talquin. The interactive trail had so many kiosks on different types of trees. We learned that white oaks like being near waters and how to distinguish a tree by it's leaves. You can do that from examining the shape of the leaves, where the veins run, and the texture of the leaves. I also learned that there can be mountainous area in Florida. The Ravine Trail followed the river where it had carved out a path down through the rock. We were also able to walk across a beaver dam, so we learned how they are surprisingly sturdy and hold a lot of weight. We could also see how the beavers had changed the landscape, because a large pond formed behind the dam.
Final Summary
For the final count our most educational Adventure Friday destinations included Lake George State Forest, The Dade City Pioneer Village and Museum's Civil War Reenactment (which Momma apparently never blogged about), Fort Cooper State Park, and Lake Talquin State Forest.
